The beginning of each year brings with it a renewed focus on our mission here at Converge as we seek to start and strengthen churches worldwide. As some of you may be aware, the Board of Overseers commissioned a Presidential Nomination Subcommittee to identify a leader who can propel our movement forward into the future.
Today, the Board of Overseers is recommending its unanimous support for the nomination of Pastor John K. Jenkins Sr. as Converge President for a new six-year term. Converge delegates will vote beginning June 19, as part of the Converge Biennial Meeting, which coincides this year with the S2 East at Heartland Church in Indianapolis, Ind. from June 25-27.
Pastor Jenkins
(full bio link) is senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Glenarden International in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He has served as president of Converge since 2022 when the Board of Overseers appointed him. Pastor Jenkins is a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Glenarden and was later called to be Senior Pastor. The church grew under his leadership from a few hundred members to over 12,000 members today. He led his church to join Converge in 1999. He has served as vice president of national ministries at Converge under then-President Jerry Sheveland.
Over a three-month period in 2023, the nomination subcommittee led a robust process to consider Pastor Jenkins’s nomination after he had expressed interest in continuing his service as President. The subcommittee’s work included a review of Converge executive job descriptions, input from Converge’s regions and an interview with Pastor Jenkins. Additionally, the subcommittee developed and conducted a survey sent to all Converge churches to gather more feedback.
After a full review of the subcommittee report, the full Board of Overseers, including Converge’s 10 regional presidents, issued a unanimous resolution to nominate Pastor Jenkins to a six-year term during the upcoming Biennial.
